Your goal

I remember when I first started Personal Training and I had a consultation with a new client.

*

When I asked him about his goals I couldn’t believe what happened next.

*

He went to his bag and pulled from it a men’s health magazine. He held the magazine and pointed to the airbrushed Adonis on the front cover.

*

I knew what was coming..   ‘I want to look like this guy’

*

In my head I was thinking ‘this is not a fucking hair salon’ nor am I a miracle worker. Needless to say the remainder of the consultation was spent managing expectations.

*

To me his goal, although endearing, just didn’t make sense to me. He wanted to look like someone else!

*

I explained to the portly, middle aged gentleman sitting in front of me that the professional model on the front cover had spent many years training and nourishing himself to achieve that physique. Also the model would take extra steps in the months leading up to the shoot, lighting, tanning, makeup and airbrushing would do the rest.

*

Not even the guy in the picture looks like the guy in the picture!

*

I explained to the gentleman that we are going to focus on him and getting his body to the best it can be. We agreed on goals that were going to make him feel good about his body and improve his confidence and health. Then we are going to see what that looks like.

*

All around us we are subjected to these images of physical perfection. We look at other people’s chapter 20 and compare our chapter 1 to it. There is no wonder we feel bad about our bodies.

*

When setting your goals don’t look at others, concentrate on what you would like to improve about your body then put your energy into the small steps to achieve that.

*

Other people’s bodies are not your goal.
